I decided to divide this first lecture into two different posts so that it would be easier for me to read it back when needed.

RESOLUTION AND PIXELS

This section of the pre-recorded video explored the topic of Resolution and Pixels. A designer needs to have a general knowledge of this, especially when working on images on Photoshop. This section aims to get us to understand how to prepare an image for printing it on to paper and to post it on the web. To do so, Steve showed us, step by step, all we needed to do.

The picture on the left is the sample picture he used in the presentation. The grid helped us to understand what Pixel Density is. This is the number of pixels each little square (square inch) contains, and that is what creates an image. If the image needs to be printed each square inch must contain 300 dpi (dots per inch) (300x300) which bring us to a total of 90 000 pixels per square inch. If the aim is to publish an image online the size can be much smaller. The optimal size is 72 PPI (pixels per inch) (so that we keep it quite a small size).

COMPRESSING AN IMAGE FOR THE WEB

Steve, in this final section, showed us how to access the image size properties and alter the resolution. To help us a bit more with the process, he uploaded some very useful PDF files on Blackboard. To bring down the size of a heavy image is important to reduce its resolution (72 PPI is the standard resolution). To save an image for the web there is a very specific button (file---export---save for web legacy). Clicking here will bring us to a pop-up window that (as Steve suggested) will then allow us to save the file.

MY THOUGHTS

In week two of this module, as I already mentioned, Adelina gave me her feedback about last year final module Responding to Professional Practice. In her feedback, she suggested adjusting the quality of some of the pictures in my Portfolio. I believe that the notes I gathered in this week session, will be fundamental to help me with that issue. I am still working on adjusting my Portfolio, so far I have just been thinking about the written content. However, I feel like now I have the right knowledge to sort out the pictures as well.
