Lately, I have been thinking about how to start designing my Manifesto. First of all, I decided to do some sort of visual research into examples of existing Manifestos. For instance, I gave a look at the Bauhaus Manifesto (by W.Gropius, 1919) and the Futurism Manifesto (by F.T.Marinetti, 1909). I chose these two examples mostly because I was already quite familiar with the content. During High-school I clearly remember studying both, and being very curious about them. Their message and aesthetics were extremely powerful and perfectly coherent with their period of time. In his Manifesto,

Gropius managed to explain the importance of craftsmanship and architecture. Also how art, up to then, was only based on ornaments. This had to stop so that architecture could flourish in its natural beauty, without any embellishments but its functionality. On the left, I decided to add this graphic, which is one of the most iconic about the Bauhaus movement. I am really fascinated by how the artist decided to use words and simple shapes to convey the essence of the movement.
In 1909, before Bauhaus was born, Marinetti wrote his Manifesto for a famous newspaper in Italy and then translated in French and published on LeFigaro. His Manifesto conveyed the ideas of the time which involved glorifying war, speed, machines. Despite I really disliked its written content and its ideals, I found the graphics of the Futurism extremely appealing. Throughout my research, I came across a poem (by Marinetti) in which the graphic aspect was dominant. Below, a picture of the publication called Zang Tumb Tumb.

The similarity with the graphic I mentioned earlier is clear. In this instance, mostly words are used and they are placed on the paper so that they form various shapes. I am starting to think that my design Manifesto is going to be inspired by these sort of graphics. I consider myself to be an extremely organised and schematic person. I believe this style would speak for itself. I think I could use key-words to describe my ideas and ideals. But to be honest, this is still just an idea, I think the next thing I am going to do is to give a look also at some of the Manifestos last year students realised. Doing so might inspire my own.
