On Thursday we were introduced to Steve. From now on, every Thursday we are going to have a session with him so that we can learn more about how to use a studio set to take professional pictures of our projects. In every session we are going to explore and learn different subjects that are all going to help us in our journey to become designers. Firstly, after a quick Health and Safety induction, we have been shown around to better understand where to find the equipment we needed. Most of the equipment can be rent from the university store on level 5, however, it is also possible to use some of the items in the storage units on level 6 (where the photography studios are). After, we got back to the main class and Steve showed us some of the cameras, the stands and lights available. He also showed us how to secure the cable of the lights on the floor using some masking tape, so that it was safe to work with. Then, he talked to us through the different varieties of lenses that it is possible to use, the different properties of each one of them, and how to connect a camera to a computer. To conclude the session, he showed us how to open and set up the backdrop to use when photographing our models. This comes in different lengths and colors like white, black, peach, gray, and green. The reason why we should use a backdrop while shooting is because it allows us to have a background with no hard edges that might look not visually pleasing on camera. I found this first session very inspiring because I realized how little I knew about photography and the equipment that comes with this practice. So far, whenever I had to take a picture of my models I never really paid much attention to details and I never even thought about all the options I had. Using the studio will allow me to take more professional and visually appealing pictures that I can post on social media and insert in my portfolio.
