I decided to undertake this course led by magazine designer John McWade because I intend to come up with some sort of magazine layout for the look of my Portfolio. This is something I am still not entirely sure of, but anyway, even if I end up doing something entirely different I still gained some important notions and tips for the future. When I will work as an assistant Production Designer, I will most certainly be required to design magazines, posters, journals and other graphic props. So I thought following this course would be helpful anyway. John McWade, in his course, talked me through all there is to know about creating a successful design for a magazine: how the margins should be like, what fonts are more effective and how to layout text and images. For my Portfolio, I intend to create some sort of squared magazine with a very minimalistic design that recalls the design of my Business card and Website. This course gave me some very useful insights on how important is the layout in a magazine. Text and images need to have a perfect balance so that they don't outshine each other, and that is what I aim to achieve with my Portfolio: a visually pleasing, but not overwhelming, design.
